Six daily habits for healthy teeth and gums
Most dental problems are preventable. These simple routines protect your smile between visits.
1. Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste
Brush for about two minutes, last thing at night and at one other time. Spit out after brushing rather than rinsing, so the fluoride keeps working.
2. Clean between your teeth
A toothbrush cannot reach between teeth. Use floss or interdental brushes daily – this is where gum disease and decay often begin.
3. Watch how often you have sugar
How often you eat or drink sugar matters as much as how much. Keep sweet foods and drinks, including sweetened tea, to mealtimes where possible.
4. Don’t smoke
Smoking and chewing tobacco stain teeth, increase the risk of gum disease and slow healing after treatment.
5. Protect your teeth
Avoid using teeth to open packaging or crack hard shells, and ask about a mouthguard if you play contact sport or grind your teeth.
6. Keep regular check-ups
Regular examinations find small problems before they become painful or costly. Your dentist will recommend how often you should be seen.
